Prepare for your driving eyesight report
First-time learner-permit applicants generally need an eyesight report completed by an optometrist or medical practitioner. This is a professional assessment, not a UK-style number-plate check.
When is the report required?
The RSA lists first learner-permit applications, certain non-EU licence exchanges and removal of the sight-correction notation among the circumstances requiring an eyesight report.
What happens next?
Arrange an appointment with an optometrist or doctor. Sign the form in their presence. The RSA says it must be dated within one month of the application.
What is assessed?
The official report records visual acuity and other relevant vision information. Group 1 driving guidance includes at least 6/12 (0.5 decimal) binocular acuity with correction if needed; assessment of visual fields also matters.
Appointment checklist
- Check that an eyesight report is needed for your particular application.
- Book an optometrist or medical practitioner and bring your current glasses or contacts.
- Use the current NDLS eyesight report form and follow the provider’s instructions.
- Submit it within the official validity period for your application.
A web-based letter game cannot replace the Irish eyesight report. We have deliberately left out a pass/fail simulator for Ireland.
